As I understand it, a handful of people tried to contact the owner of the http://www.yabbforum.com/ domain without any success. Ideally, under the circumstances, ownership of that domain would have transfered to Dandello. Or at the very least, a simple forwarding of that domain could have been done.

I tried that too, unsuccessfully. I used to get along well with JonB. I was a moderator in the Yabbforum myself, but I almost only looked after the German members. I was always able to help quickly here. Suddenly the Yabb forum was closed. I never found out a reason. Dandello also holds back. But I think she doesn't know anymore either. Be that as it may, we cannot change it. Only Dandello can keep YaBB alive. She won't do it. What for? YaBB 2.7 is actually almost finished. I just think she did too much. In my opinion, incorporating mods from the zip file would not have been necessary. But it would be nice if she would adapt the mods, especially those from XTC, to 2.6.12. You can no longer upload YouTube films. Media doesn't work. I actually see a further development to 2.7 as unnecessary if these remaining bugs from 2.6.12 were to be fixed.

I removed some bugs from 2.6.12 myself and reported about them. YaBB runs very stable on my server. When I wanted to install it on Bluehost I found that I couldn't do the forum settings in the admin center. I have to check whether I did something wrong or whether I can only make the changes after the installation. That's also the reason why Normp's forum is currently running on my server. But I will find the error very quickly, even though I'm not a coder. But you can see that every server works differently. But it is also possible that Normp's server is Asbach-Uralt (that's what a cognac is called in Germany). But you don't have to understand that now. Debian and Perl are totally outdated, but an upgrade is not possible because it is a V server. You don't have root access. That can also be a reason. V servers are cheap, but nothing is being done about them.

Because of the arrogance within the YaBB forum, I can also report a lot. It's a good thing I never was and am not like that. Well, if I asked someone to restore a forum and the owner then messed with me, I would get pissed too. I also sometimes forgot about my good childhood home.

We probably don't need to talk about SQL anymore. The advantages and disadvantages are now known. Just a tip: never exceed the limit, this can end badly during a restoration.

If I had the kind of knowledge that you have about how flat files work, etc., and if I was able to keep YaBB operating without getting a 500 error, I likely would have followed Dandello's lead to create my own YaBB Support Forum.

I hope that you'll consider it.

Ideally, my thinking is that the more YaBB Support Forums that we have online, the better the YaBB community will be served. In turn, that will enable YaBB forums all over the world to continue operating indefinitely.

On that note, it would be great if all YaBB Support Forums would exchange links. That way, whenever any of them cease operations, support for YaBB could still continue.

On a related note, it would be prudent for those who know how to do it to have backup copies of the files that are needed to install YaBB.

I had this idea for the German-speaking area for a long time, but never implemented it. It would be worth a try. However, I can only restore one forum. When it comes to coding, I don't know what to do next. Okay, if some people from other parts of the world joined in, it would be okay.

Yes, it would be worth a try.  Wink

On that note, Dandello appears to be the only person on YaBB's development team to have made the effort to continue its development. But probably more important, it also appears that she's the only developer to have created a support forum for YaBB.

In a word, those two things are extraordinary! Smiley

That may be, but at the present time, the link that I quoted is what Dandello has provided. It's been a while, but as a "Tester" of YaBB's 2.6.11 forum software, I remember downloading those resources to successfully install it for review.

I looked at your forum. Be careful, you have YaBB 2.6.11
This no longer works on Debian 10. I don't know about the other Linux versions.
You incorporated Google Translate above. Can I have the code? (ask kindly). I think it is written in HTML and incorporated into the template.

See my website
https://www.anti-scam.de

In the next few days I will make a mod that fixes some small bugs in 2.6.12. I have already reported about it here.

It appears that you're correct about that.

I think I got the coding directly from Google, but I don't remember. Since I didn't find any notes about it, I'll have to create a note in my YaBB help files.

In any case, in the Admin menu under "Forum Controls" and then "Template", it looks like there are two places to enable Google Translate where it's positioned.

Look for {yabb grayscript} as I have it in the coding below, and then below that after a space, copy & paste what's shown.

Code
Select All
 {yabb grayscript}

 <meta name="google-translate-customization" content="bc483284b366963d-637464d1a65fc0e4-g23f100ec9fc785f2-2e"></meta>

Also, look for <td class="small vtop">{yabb newstitle} <span id="newsdiv"></span> as I have it in the coding below, and then below that after a space, copy & paste what's shown.

Code
Select All
 <td class="small vtop">{yabb newstitle} <span id="newsdiv"></span>

 <div id="google_translate_element"></div><script type="text/javascript">
 function googleTranslateElementInit() {
 new google.translate.TranslateElement({pageLanguage: 'en', layout: google.translate.TranslateElement.InlineLayout.SIMPLE, multilanguagePage: true}, 'google_translate_element');
 }
 </script><script type="text/javascript" src="//translate.google.com/translate_a/element.js?cb=googleTranslateElementInit
"></script>

 </td>
 </tr>
 </table>

I hope that works.

Oops. I almost forgot to address your warning about YaBB 2.6.11 not working on Debian 10. I don't know offhand what Linux version I'm using on the server that has this test forum, but I'm pretty sure that it's one of the older versions.

In any case, I believe that this is also an issue with the YaBB 2.4 forum that I operate on the same server. I'm pretty sure that it's still working because an older version of Linux as well as an older version of Perl are being used.

Most of the domains that I operate are in the cloud on another server with another company that I've happily been using since 2016. I'm reluctant to move the remaining three domains to that newer server because I suspect that the two YaBB forums that I maintain will be inoperable on it (YaBB 2.4 & YaBB 2.6.11).

I'm not overly worried, though, as I have contingency plans in place to mitigate the loss of the active YaBB 2.4 forum that's been online since February 11, 2002. I'd hate to lose it, but sometimes changes in life are unavoidable, and we need to adapt. Wink

Why don't you take this mod? It works perfectly on 2.6.11. I have tested it.

https://yabbforumsoftware.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1426875947

Here is my gift for you.

Code
Select All
<FORM method=GET action="https://www.google.com/search">
 <A HREF="https://www.google.com/">
 <IMG SRC="https://www.google.com/logos/Logo_40wht.gif" border="0"

 <input type=text name=q size=31 maxlength=255 value="">
 <input type=submit name=btnG VALUE="Google Search"><p>
 <input type=hidden name=domains value="https://www.xxxxxx.de">
 <input type='hidden' name='ie' value='iso-8859-1'>
 <input type='hidden' name='oe' value='iso-8859-1'>
 <input type=radio name=sitesearch value="">World Wide Web
 <input type=radio name=sitesearch value="https://www.xxxxxx" checked>your Forum
 </FORM>

In Templates -> index.html

Search:
Code
Select All
                 <td class="small vtop" style="padding-left:1%">{yabb newstitle} <span id="newsdiv"></span>
                 </td>
             </tr>
         </table>

and Add after the Code.

Google Translate works.

I found a better programmed code. Here the countries are not next to each other but among each other.
That doesn't broaden the forum.

Code
Select All
<div id="google_translate_element"></div>

 <script type="text/javascript">
 function googleTranslateElementInit() {
   new google.translate.TranslateElement({pageLanguage: 'en'}, 'google_translate_element');
 }
 </script>

 <script type="text/javascript" src="//translate.google.com/translate_a/element.js?cb=googleTranslateElementInit
"></script>

 </body>

I wonder what's going on. The code that I use works fine in both of the YaBB forums that I have on our server. You always seem to figure things out, though, so I'm looking forward to learning about what the issue was, or how it worked out for you.

In the meantime, maybe the best thing to do is to start from scratch, and then make modifications to suit your taste.

I think it's because of Java. The translation tools all work, but then images are no longer displayed in the forum. You can display the image, but only if you click on it. That's not the point of it. Maybe Dandello can adapt the mod from XTC, I can't do it. It runs on your Yabb version. Not with mine. That means it's already running, but the flags are nicely distributed across the screen. That's because I can't make the adjustment.

I think it's because of Java.

I'm a bit confused. Huh

The coding that I provided doesn't display flags; just the names of the different languages that Google has made available. It works well on both of the YaBB forums that are on my server. It should be noted that it also worked well on dozens of other YaBB forums when that same coding was utilized.

However, if you're referencing the coding that you provided, then I suppose the problem could be associated with Java.

Of, if you're referencing "Mod gTranslate for YaBB 2.6.11" that you previously linked, keep in mind that a guest named CJ3Apage posted the following:

Quote:
We did install it and test it. It does work great with the "google default" but a pain to figure out if we want to use "redirect" with just few flag selected without the dropdown menu....it give us a lot of errors.

Anyway we like it and hope it will get improve.

What he writes there is once again beginner-like. The XTC mod worked perfectly for me. Whenever XTC did something, he always did it perfectly because I had always tested his mods. There was probably a misunderstanding with the flags. I meant the flags in the XTC mod. It was always the same with both translation tools. I couldn't see any pictures.

don't worry, i didn't mix anything.

Since you're mixing that mod with both translation tools, and getting the same error of not being able to see pictures, then the solution until you can figure out what's going on is for you not to mix all of that coding together.

In other words, you need to pick one of the three options, and only that option. Test each option to see how each one works, and then you'll know which one works best for your forum.

It should be noted that when I looked at your forum, even though it was in maintenance mode, the "Google translate" box popped onto the screen. So whatever coding that you're using now seems to be working fine.  Cool
