To make things even more complicated  - on a brand new forum even with multiple language packs, you can (and should) use UTF-8 for all of the Language Packs.  (For instance here we've been all UTF-8 from the start.) Notepad++ does a pretty good job converting YaBB Language Packs.

Support for the other encodings is for if you are upgrading an old forum that already has non-UTF-8 characters hiding in the various data files. Most all English forums can just change the encoding. It's the languages with the upper ASCII characters that have to have their data converted from ISO-1189-1 to UTF-8.

Once we have a reliable converter that can handle things like YaBB Forum's ancient data, everything will go to UTF-8 and then Андрей will be able to read his name even when in not in Russian.

It was not my intention to create a problem what maybe does not exists, but I thought it is important to know that there are difficulties here and there, and the user is in an important topic to point out what they like to do.
thanks again .... Wink

Words like "should" and "will" are the ones that repel forum admins away from YaBB... For every new version there is some forums that decide not to upgrade because new version removes some feature that they think is essential.

In terms of the Language packs - we're in transition. We needed to support old data encodings while transitioning to UTF-8 (Which we're going to need when YaBB develops a version using 'real' databases.) That's what 3.0 was supposed to do but didn't do well.

Our big issue with transitioning is that there's currently no good way to convert encoding on old data that has multiple embedded encodings. Once we have that licked (if it can be) then converting old encodings will become part of the 'convert old boards' process. Admins won't have to worry about 'should' or 'will'.

@ThM - your observations are great - it tells us where our explanation of new features needs to be better.

Guys - It's actually a mystery as to why a mixed encoding should break 'Male' and 'Female' in the vars files. Logically, those should both be simple ASCII and should encode the same in ISO-8859-1 and UTF-8. But obviously that assumption is wrong. (JonB and I went into the encoding issue thinking it would be simple. We now both feel we've entered uncharted territory where every native tells us something different - and they all want us to fall over a cliff.)

I'm using real databases (MySQL) and Latin-1... Works 100%...

But we still have a problem with multiple encodings in data. And that's where going to UTF-8 will make sense. The non-Latin-1 encoding is still very much a work in progress.

I have never been fan of UTF-8 or other variable-length character encodings... I mainly use Latin-1 and UCS-2 (not to be confused with UTF-16). Mapping between Latin-1 and UCS-2 is one-to-one... No conversion needed ever Smiley Only drawback is that case conversion and sorting only works if the scripting language internally uses UCS-2 or UCS-4.

And internally Perl uses Unicode.

All my forums are using latest version of YaBB SE which uses MySQL and PHP... Less problems than with flat files and Perl.

I know. As can quickly once a contribution to Nirvana disappear when one is in the move too fast. Everything already happened. YaBB 3 was started several years ago, but never completed. The cost certainly many users. It has always promised but never completed. The unfinished version you can download today in the SVN.

This time we're going more carefully. We will get to a mySQL version but we want to get the rest of the big stuff handled first - refactored code, old bugs fixed, security essentials added.
3.0 also had some issues with what direction the Perl coding should take. There's been a push to go to the Object-Oriented model like Java and some other languages use. But the model tends to leave a lot of good coders just scratching their heads and saying "Heck no, I won't go!"
I'm told that was one of the other problems that happened with 3.0 - some people were pushing for the OO model and other's didn't see any need for it with YaBB.

Can we split this thread... This has little to do with German language packs...

I do not mind that. I do not see it so closely.
