Not Secure Error

Hi All, it's been a long time.

I've been getting a [Not Secure] message from Brave's browser. In the past I didn't worry about but now it seems I do.

I can log in but if I try to post something I get knocked off and and to log in again. This doesn't happen in Waterfox ro Chrome... yet.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

@ RonS2

do you mean this page here?, i.e. yabbforumsoftware? If so, it has not switched to https. You can ignore that. There is no harmful content here.
But when it comes to your own server, things are different. Please define it more precisely.

Thanks for getting back to me. As you can see in the image this is the error I see.

But what has started to happen is when I post something in my forum I get kicked off and then I need to log in again, all this and my post didn't list.

I'm thinking this is more Brave not liking Yabb.

Ok, I checked out your website. It's not the forum, it's not the browser, it's the server. You have to switch from http to https with the admin tool of the server (Plesk, cPanel) or whatever you are using.

You will also need to add a redirect to tell that server that any links to your site (including internal links) go the the https version.

BTW, Firefox and Chrome will both recognize the issue but can be told to ignore it. They trust you to make that call.

Unfortunately, I don't know the Brave browser and can't say what it can or can't do.

Well, for a long time Chrome didn't give an option to ignore warnings on sites that had issues with their SSL certificate. (As in it was expired or other things like that.) It also complained if there were internal links (like to graphics) that weren't being called via https when the page itself was https. (This was/is mostly for developers.) Firefox has always given the user the option to ignore the warning and continue on to the site in question.

However: what I think is happening with Brave browser is it is actually interpreting the non-https internal links as going to a different non-https site - which the user isn't logged into because the login info is saved in a cookie associated with the site address. (Which is how Chrome and Firefox probably should behave.)

So make sure ALL your internal links are redirected to https. (It's pretty easy in cPanel - don't know Plesk so can't say how easy it is on that.)

And here's a link to some instructions: https://geekflare.com/http-to-https-redirection/

It's always difficult to answer such questions if you don't know which server is being used (virtual or dedicated). With a dedicated server you have to take care of the settings yourself (see screener). Install Firefox and see if your site is delivered in https. If you can force https with the Brave browser, that doesn't mean your members can too. It still shows me as not secure with Firefox. Nor can security be enforced. You can usually find the setting under Domain>Settings>Security. You will also get the certificate here. No security without the certificate. As said, the server has to deliver the security over port 443 and it doesn't.

The cPanel instructions are #4  ( https://geekflare.com/http-to-https-redirection/ ) - you'll have to edit (very carefully) the .htaccess file for your domain. If your hosting service has support, ask them to do it.

I'm able to post with Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Waterfox. I would assume other people can too. Just can't post with the switch in Brave when I turn off HTTPS

@ pyragony54

I do have an SSL certificate for my site, so I'm guessing I'm encrypted

@ Dandello

When I apply

Code
Select All
RewriteEngine On
 RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
 RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI}

to the htaccess I get the following error in Brave when I try to post

Code
Select All
Untrapped Error :
Can't call method "upload" on an undefined value at ./Sources/Post.pl line 1296.

The forum breaks in Firefox and Waterfox. I didn't test the other browsers

In that case you'll need to remove your edits in .htaccess

See https://docs.cpanel.net/cpanel/domains/redirects/ - it has instructions on forcing https on a domain

Write slowly again. I need to know what kind of server do you have. A virtual or a dedicated one. With a dedicated one you have to make the settings yourself, with a virtual one your provider is responsible for it. Then the setting for it will probably not exist either. A certificate is definitely not visible. I checked your site. By the way, it affects not only the forum, but your entire website. You don't write a word about it. You can tinker around on your website and forum as much as you want, it won't do any good. Your pages remain insecure. This can only be changed on the server. It's not YaBB's fault. Since I don't know cPanel, I don't know if you can even request a certificate. With a dedicated server I can do that for you, with a virtual one only the provider can request a certificate. The server operator certainly has a certificate, your websites don't. You have to request that yourself. I can do that for you, but I need access to the admin panel. I hope that was understandable now.

I want to start off by saying thank you to both of you for taking the time for helping me. I'm not as sharp as I was back in 2020.

Yes I think I understand, I didn't realize it was my whole site until now. This is on a shared sever with less than a dozen other sites (or so I'm told)

I did contact my server people and this is what they said
Quote:
We request you to please check this concern with your developers or cms provider and its non wp cms

Then when I copied and pasted your input I get

Quote:
Could you please request them to provide exact issue and steps we wiull check it at server end.  Please check these images link which needs to set with https by your developers or cms provider only.

They sent me an image of a list of jpgs

I'll try again and hopefully I'll get someone different
