Good Idea

If you are banned, you should be seeing a banned notice when you attempt to log in.

(And pretty sure we had it set up that admins can't get banned.)
So, if YOU can login using your trusted person's credentials, you should be able to see what's going on with your old credentials using the various member utilities.

Thanks for your help Dandello, it's always appreciated.

It seems that the member I elevated to admin can post with no problems.

I started to wonder if my IP got banned. I found ban_log.txt but I'm not in there.

IIRC, there is another place that I can see if my IP is banned, I can't remember what it's called. Something with security?

No idea why editing the older vars file didn't work unless there is something wrong in that file.

2.6.23 SHOULD work under Perl 5.6 without issues. (YaBB 2.6.12 works with some editing in YaBB.pl) Make sure you use absolute paths in Paths.pm.

It's been a very long time since I've worked in YaBB. I've spent the past 4 years elbow deep in Unreal coding.

That worked. I can see everything is there.

I took a look in the members folders and the first name on the list was a person that hasn't been on in over a decade. I edited their vars file by changing the password and position to administrator. No joy logging in.

I then changed a trusted member's vars and made him an administer.  He was able to log in with no problems. He's not very computer savvy.

The server is on using Perl 5.6.? Would Yabb 2.6.2 work with this?

Variables -> Settings.pm ->
Code (Perl)
Select All
$maintenance = 0; # Set to 1 to enable Maintenance mode

Sadly that didn't work.

Is there a way for me to turn off maintenance mode from one of the files?

2.6 uses 'admin.vars' (all lower case). Open that file in a text editor and replace the password by hand. (YaBB should automatically encrypt it once you've logged in.)

As I recall we decided to force admins to not use 'admin' for their password for security reasons. (But I may be remembering 2.7)

I just upgraded my forum and all seems to have gone well.

I used admin, admin to log in and it didn't work

My original name and password didn't work.

The new forum is in maintenance mode and I'm stuck.

I see the vars and related files for both names
