What do these proxies do? Any IP address can become a RES proxy. I won't go into too much detail here, but if you find that your website is inaccessible and you are seeing an unusually high number of visitors, you have likely fallen victim to these proxies. Blocking them via the firewall is pointless, as an IP acting as a RES proxy today might not be one tomorrow. There are ways to protect yourself to some extent, provided you operate your own dedicated server and have root access.

1.) Route your nameservers through a service like Cloudflare.
2.) Install Cloudflare Turnstile.
3.) Install the RES proxy filter from https://www.ip2location.com. You will need to register for this. The "Lite" filter is free and perfectly adequate; however, it must be updated regularly.

If anyone is affected, I can provide a quick guide for setting up the filter. It isn't difficult, but root access is required.

You will need to set up Turnstile yourself, as it requires two API keys, one of which is secret. Cloudflare provides instructions for this on their website.

All of this is free of charge.

Liebe Mitglieder,
es gibt ein neues Verschleierungstool im Internet. Die sogenannten RES-Proxys. (Wohnort-Proxys).

Talk it Up - YaBB won't start https://yabbforumsoftware.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1710350194/3#3 YaBB Development & Mods/Talk it Up https://yabbforumsoftware.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1710350194/3#3 no-email@yabbforumsoftware.com (pyragony54) Fri, 15 Mar 2024 00:59:01 GMT shoelessbruce wrote on Mar 13th, 2024 at 7:42pm:

I is rookie...

It is possible that your server operator does not support PERL. The data is there - I can get to them using PHP but not with Perl. Luckily none of the YaBB tests were using mySQL.

Edited:

The problem reaching the databases was creating a situation that made it look like .htaccess wasn't working. Apparently the techs fubarred on the upgrade and installed some 32-bit items that didn't play well with the rest of it.
Talk it Up - My life with YaBB https://yabbforumsoftware.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1475068366/0#0 YaBB Development & Mods/Talk it Up https://yabbforumsoftware.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1475068366/0#0 no-email@yabbforumsoftware.com (Dandello) Wed, 28 Sep 2016 13:12:46 GMT

(Gaining on moving the code to the comply with the strict pragma.) I'm a member of quite a few forums where the preview has to be refreshed to see any changes made.

Edited:

Remember, for the vast majority of forums, the rules that are in place are a response to that admin's experiences in running that or other forums. For myself, I have had very bad experiences with people (not YaBBers and not here) making very negative comments about other forums - including members of other forums making flat out false statements about MY forums and members.
So - concerning YaBBForum - a quick note that they're having problems that maybe I can fix, fine. Beyond that, please don't.
